The Ghanaian government has apologised to the Nigerian government following the shocking demolition of the building housing the Nigerian High Commission’s staff in Accra.

According to TVC News, Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Ghana has stated that officials will be visiting the high commission today to access the damage done to the property.

The plot of land in question houses the high commissioners residence and four other buildings and was ceded to the Nigerian government in the sixties.

Report says, a portion of the land had remained undeveloped until eight years ago when building works began and now, a business man who says he is the legitimate owner surfaced, triggering dispute.

Sometime in 2000, official correspondence was exchanged between Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Jerry Rawlings of Ghana where the issue of ownership was resolved and the sum of fifty million Ghanaian cedis paid.

Building works commenced on a portion of the land after all approvals were sought and obtained from regulatory authorities. Report says.

It would be recalled that the Nigerian High Commission facility in Ghanan was demolished over the weekend by unidentified individuals while the Ghanaian government did not do anything to stop the act.

The Nigerian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoferrey Onyeama has condemned the act while expressing shock that such could be allowed to happen in a country with bilateral Relations.

Anaedoonline.com reported House of Representatives Committee on Foreign Affairs has condemned the recent demolition of the Nigerian Embassy staff quarters in Accra, stressing that Ghana must face the consequences.

The chairman of the committee, Yusuf Buba who stated this in a statement today, said what happened was an external aggression that infringed the international rights of Nigeria.

The country had claimed that unknown persons carried out the act.

Buba described the demolition as a gross violation of all conventions and treaties on diplomatic relations and friendship between both countries.

The chairman quoted a witness who narrated how a heavy-duty bulldozer arrived at the diplomatic premises at late hours of the night and broke through the gate. The bulldozer demolished four units of the nearly-completed four-bedroom block of flats.

He noted that several frantic efforts were made by members of the Nigeria Mission to report what was ongoing to both the Ghana Police Service and their Foreign Affairs Ministry.
