There have been a number of reported cases of rape in several parts of the country in last few weeks. Popular Nigerian musician, Oladapo Daniel Oyebanjo, otherwise known as D’banj, has asked the lady who accused him of rape to pay a sum of N100m within 48 hours or face legal action.

D’banj made the demands in response to allegation by one Miss Seyitan that the singer raped her in an hotel in Victoria Island, Lagos two years ago.

On his Instagram page, D’banj in the pre-litigation letter signed by his lawyer, Mike Ezekhome (SAN) and addressed to Miss Babatayo’s lawyer, Ojoge, Omileye and Partners, also demanded that an apology be published in at least four national dailies.

The letter read in part, “We have been instructed to demand the following: That your client makes an outright apology and a total retraction of each and every false allegation made against and concerning our client.

“The said apology and retraction shall be published in four national dailies with wide circulation in Nigeria as well as on social media platforms and handles being used by your client and her hirelings.

He also demanded that the accuser make a deposit of N100m through his chamber for battering his image.

“Your client should make a compensatory deposit of the sum of N100m only through these chambers in favor of our client to assuage his battered image.”

According to D’banj, the allegation was meant to destroy his reputation and insult his wife.

Amidst the renewed spate of rape, assault, molestation and murder of young Nigerian women, the Founder and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Medplus Pharmacy, Joke Bakare has reiterated the need to refrain from blaming it on the victims.

In related news, Bakare, an eminent Pharmacist with a passion for healthcare and beauty products, said the discourse on rape in the Nigerian context has more often than not been erroneously blamed on the victims instead of the perpetrators.

“We must actively begin to build the ideology of shifting the blame away from women and to transfer it, without reserve, on the people who have harmed them”, she declared.

She noted that rape, sexual assault ranks high as some of the prevalent issues plaguing not only the Nigerian socio-cultural space but the entire African continent.

The system, according to her, is so designed to discriminate against women in ways that recommend little to no strenuous punishments for rapists and sex offender, adding that “this is something that needs to be fixed quickly”.

She therefore suggested that policies, laws, and legislation that grant women speedy, fair justice and support must be put in place, noting that systems which continue to hold women to insane standards of purity to be able to have their stories believed, must be dismantled and scrapped altogether.
