There have been speculations surrounding the future of the former African best player. Arsenal manager, Mikel Arteta, has expressed his optimism that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will remain at the club.

However, Arsenal boss Arteta feels the Gunners have a “responsibility to make him feel this is the right next step in his career.”

In an interview over the weekend, Arsenal captain Aubameyang revealed he is yet to get a new contract offer from the club, with his current deal expiring next summer.

The Gabon striker who is the lead scorer for Arsenal this season has been consistently linked with several clubs like Barcelona, Real Madrid and Inter Milan.

“I think it’s our responsibility to make him feel that this is the right next step in his career. In order to do that he needs to feel valued, I think he needs to feel that he belongs to us and we want him.

“And then he really needs to believe we can take this club forward in the way we want to do and he’s going to be a key player to do that,” Arteta said in a prematch news conference held via Zoom on Monday.

Anaedoonline.com reported that Former Arsenal defender, Martin Keown, has called on Mikel Arteta to strip Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang of his role as captain amid uncertainty over the player’s future.

Aubameyang’s current contract with the Gunners runs out next summer.

The Gabon striker is yet to agree fresh terms with Arsenal and has been linked with an exit.

Aubameyang became captain in November, after Granit Xhaka was removed following his altercation with his own supporters.

But Keown told talkSPORT: “I think the message needs to be to the player ‘look, we can’t have you captaining the club if there’s uncertainty around your contract’, in the last year of his contract, that can’t be allowed to happen.
