At least 40 cities and Washington, DC, have imposed curfews in response to protests across the country this weekend over the death of the unarmed 46-year-old black man at the hands of a white officer in Minneapolis, World News reported.

Additionally, approximately 5,000 National Guard members have been activated in 15 states and Washington, DC, with another 2,000 prepared to activate if needed.

The United States has faced a week of demonstrations with largely peaceful daytime protests turning into violent clashes at night after the death of Floyd.

Police have arrested almost 4,100 people in several U.S cities, while at least five people have been killed in violence that flared as demonstrations in parts of the country devolved into mayhem.

Amnesty International announced that US police across the country are failing their obligations under international law to respect and facilitate the right to peaceful protest, exacerbating a tense situation and endangering the lives of protesters.

One former officer, who was seen with his knee on Floyd’s neck, was charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter but protesters say the charge isn’t harsh enough, and are demanding charges for the other officers involved.

Protesters around the world, including in the UK, Germany, Italy, Denmark, New Zealand and Australia, have taken to the streets this week in solidarity with those demonstrating in the US against police brutality and racial inequity, following the death of Floyd.

George Floyd, 46, died after being arrested by police outside a shop in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Footage of the arrest on 25 May shows a white police officer, Derek Chauvin, kneeling on Mr Floyd’s neck while he was pinned to the floor.

Mr Chauvin, 44, has since been charged with murder.
