The Anambra state government working in conjunction with its Delta state counterpart has erected a gate at the Niger bridge to restrict inter border pedestrian and vehicular movements to prevent the spread of the COVID-19.

The COVID-19 taskforce members on border closure who shut the gate on Sunday, May 24, confirmed that the gate was erected on Saturday, May 23 night and will be shut intermittently to check movements.

According to them, only those exempted are allowed entry and exit and the gate will be shut completely from 8 pm to 7 am which is in line with the federal government directive of curfew.

This is also coming after allegations that all the cases of COVID-19 discovered in Anambra involved persons that sneaked into the state while the inter-state movement was barred.

According to the NCDC statistics, Delta state has recorded 31 cases of Covid-19 and Anambra has reported eight cases as of Sunday, May 24.

There was, however, tension at the Delta state end of the bridge as the iron barrier was pulled down by some angry Deltans.

It was reported that many people who were either going to Asaba or coming into Onitsha were stranded for hours due to the closure. A resident of Asaba, Mrs Chinwe Nwuzor lamented the hardship they suffered due to closure of the bridge, saying it is hard for pedestrians doing business in Onitsha.

Meanwhile, the federal government has asked traders, transporters and other people who provide services to members of the public not to hike their prices due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This was stated by the minister of information, culture and tourism, Alhaji Lai Mohammed at the daily briefing of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 in Abuja on Thursday, May 21.
