COVID-19 Death Rumour in NAUTH- Hospital Management Reacts

The Management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH) Nnewi has put forward clarifications revolving around the rumored death of a Covid19 patient at the hospital. In a press release made available to the public on Wednesday 20th May 2020, the Chief Medical Director Dr. Prof. Anthony Igwegbe highlighted the facts of the case as narrated below.

NAUTH has put forward that there is no confirmed case of COVID -19 at the hospital till date, however, a 41-year-old female was admitted at midnight via the A&E on Sunday 17th May 2020 with a diagnosis of suspected COVID- 19 having been presented with fever, cough, and difficulty with breathing but no travel history.

The hospital immediately transferred the patient to the hospital isolation Centre following the laid down triaging protocol and algorithm. Before the sample could be collected by the Rapid Response Team, the patient died shortly. The State Epidemiology team was immediately notified and they have traced the primary contacts and samples taken from all of them.

They have also proceeded on quarantine and are being closely monitored by the state epidemiology department according to NCDC guidelines and are yet to receive the results of the samples taken.

The A&E and isolation Centre have since been thoroughly disinfected by the hygienist and other members of the RRT. As a precautionary measure, the very few staff that made contact with the patient has been asked to proceed on self-isolation. The hospital community will be duly communicated as soon as the results of the COVID-19 tests are available.
