Reno Omokri, former aide of ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, has advised that Nigerian billionaires donating money to the Federal Government to help mitigate the effect of the coronavirus should have done so through banks.

Mr Omokri, a vocal critic of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, said in a tweet on Wednesday that a top commercial bank could have been selected for the cash transfer without going through the Federal Government.

“Instead of Nigerian billionaires donating moneys to the FG, they could have given it to any top commercial bank and say ‘pay ₦10k to 100,000 Nigerians with less than ₦10k in their accounts,’” he said. You can’t trust donations to the government of General @MBuhari.”

Meanwhile, Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Sadiya Farouq, said on Wednesday at Kwali Area Council in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) that the Federal Government had commenced payment of N20, 000 each to 5,000 beneficiaries of its Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) programme in the FCT.

“As we know, the CCT is for poor and vulnerable households in the country,” she said.

“Beneficiaries are entitled to N5, 000 every month; however, the payment of N20, 000 now to each beneficiary is for four months.

“It is going to happen all over the country, but we are starting with FCT, Lagos and Ogun. These are the frontline states. Other states will follow.

“With the current pandemic and circumstances on ground, this amount will go a long way to support the families in their daily lives.
