Governor Umahi Has This To Say About His Commissioners
Ebonyi State Governor, David Umahi, on Wednesday took a swipe at some members of his former cabinet for allegedly complaining that they were suffering and smiling under the government.
The governor said the commissioners rather than show patriotism and commitment in the discharge of their official duties were busy going from one office to the other, gossiping about him and his administration.
He stated that some of the commissioners at a point became too important as though the government cannot be run without them, stressing that the commissioners will be the last batch of his appointments just to show them that he could run the state without them.
Umahi made the comment during the swearing-in of the state Head of service and some senior special assistants to government, which took place at the Executive Council chambers, Government House Abakaliki.
He maintained that some of his former commissioners would not be returned but must be effectively accommodated in the government.
He warned his appointees to desist from gossiping and face their works or get ready to be sacked.
The governor called on the people of Ebonyi to show less interest in political appointments and look for what to do to contribute to the development of the state.
He said, “What is trending in Ebonyi State is that I want to be SSA and SA. Imagine the cabinet we have, everybody wants to be SA. If I am making more SAs, it must not be up to 10 percent of the SAs I have appointed. It is my opinion that we find something else doing.”
“My commissioners will come last. I want to let them know that this job can be done without anybody. My former commissioners started a very bad trend for the state and for me. Every day, it was discussing the governor, going from one office to the other. They were going about saying that they were not being given anything, and not being taken care of. If I get anybody complain again, I will get rid of that person.”
“This is not the era of coming with lies. You have to create wealth. Let’s look beyond the money we get. If you think this is a safe haven, I have withdrawn the overhead from ministries, STAs and TAs. There is so much loose funds with all the financial institutions. Let’s look beyond the money we get for paying salaries. When you attract funds from outside, you start making your overheads”, he said.
